Sunset from my Terrace — Karen Dsouza

Staring at the open sky with hues of pink, blue, yellow, and white, my soul feels infinite.

I’m one with the floating clouds tugged by an invisible thread.

I’m one with the soaring birds taking their final lap before a sound nap.

I’m one with the rustling trees making space for insects and bees.

I let my mind travel while my body relaxes to silent beats.

Sunsets are Magical, Sunsets are Divine — it is the only time when the earth and I unite.

Lying down on my terrace I stare at the shifting sky in awe. Thank You — I whisper gratitude to the passing time for showing me how precious every single day is. It’s evenings like these where I intentionally make time to witness natures magic. It takes only thirty minutes to rewind and remind myself of the infinite opportunities and blessings coming my way.

On a busy day, the sky, ground, breeze, and clouds taken for granted. With a packed schedule, I cannot pause and look outside my window to sink in the surroundings unending abundance. Due to the lockdown, I have been confined to the walls of my building. Hence, my only escape to connect with nature was the terrace. I wouldn’t have appreciated the Sun and Moon’s beauty if not for 2020. It’s been a whole year since I’ve fervently watched sunsets on the terrace, and its effects have been life-changing.

It has become my therapy time! Here’s how it can be yours too.

How to completely unwind while absorbing the Sunset:

1. Switch your phone off! ;)

Go to your spot 30 minutes before the sun sets to get into a relaxed flow state. To experience the best of nature SWITCH YOUR PHONE OFF! I’d love to do it daily (24*365) but… life gets in the middle. Or, if you want to be adventurous don't carry your phone. It will lower the dopamine levels in your body. You will become conscious of all the sounds, movements, and changes occurring in the fleeting magical moments.

2. Make a playlist and listen to your favourites ❤

Okay, I get it. We are all too attached to our phones. Maybe, you cannot switch off your device or leave it altogether, but you could try keeping it on Do Not Disturb Mode and play your favourite songs! Music is the best way to immerse yourself in the now. Make a special playlist for the sunset and lose yourself in the yellow. Listening to slow rhythmic music can help release stress and put you in a meditative state. P.s my song recommendation: What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. (songs and therapy)

3. Move your body to the rhythm of the breeze :)

While your songs play in the background, let go and sway to the breeze’s beats. Most of us have intellectual jobs. We stay locked up in our minds for a long time and lose touch with our physical bodies. Moving according to your intuition will help you feel connected to your body again. Dance-Movement Therapy (DMT) is a distinct field of therapy solely based on releasing emotions and healing mental conditions through moving your body.

4. Draw or Paint ~_~

If you are shy (like me) or worried about someone spotting you while dancing your heart out, try drawing or painting! Spending time with colours + a blank sheet of paper can uncover hidden emotions. Art therapy is a unique idea of self-exploration. It can lighten your burden, help emote and reduce stress.

5. Meditate ^_^

Finally, if all of the above seems like too much work, stick to simple meditation. Sit down, calm your mind and follow your breathing. If you are not confident enough or get easily distracted, start a guided meditation on YouTube! Meditation can lower your blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and improve your immunity system.

During this pandemic, sunsets gave me Hope. Whenever days were tough, when restlessness would paralyze my mind, sunsets would assure me that tomorrow will be a better day.

Go to your terrace, open space, or window, look up at the sky and repeat: “Tomorrow is a new day. Everything’s going to get better. I have Hope.”
